Congratulations! You've received an offer of employment from Negaunee Public Schools and you accepted. You're officially a Negaunee Miner! Now what?

The first step in onboarding new employees of our school district is to have a State and Federal background check done and to have your fingerprints entered in the Michigan State Police Criminal History Information System (CHRIS) as an official MI Public School Employee. A previous employer history review must also be done prior to your first day of work. NPS-specific paperwork is required for these tasks and can be obtained from the Superintendent's Office at 500 W Arch Street. If you have any questions about the required forms, or need additional copies, please contact Beki Kumpula, Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent. Please be advised that each item must be signed, dated and submitted to Mrs. Kumpula prior to your first day of working at NPS. 

 -- Per the Michigan Revised School Code, all employees of NPS must undergo a comprehensive background check, including a fingerprint-based criminal history records check and review of previous employment history.

Let your supervisor know Steps 1 and 2 have been completed. You'll get any first day instructions from them, along with your new NPS email address, staff photo badge, and access to buildings.

A: School Safety legislation enacted in 2006 enacted an array of statutes, including the Michigan Revised School Code, to require a criminal history check by the Michigan State Police (MSP) and a criminal records check through the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). These requirements pertain to all School District employees and individuals who regularly and continuously work under contract in a school district, intermediate school district, public school academy, or non public school.

A: At an authorized LiveScan agency. Locally, the Ishpeming City Police Department, Marquette City Police Department, and Identogo in Marquette are where NPS employees can get their prints done. Because there are specific requirements for School Employee (SE) fingerprinting, it is not recommended to go to any other agency, as they may not have access to the School Employee required reporting system. Hours of the three local agencies may vary; please contact them directly for more information.

A. In order to get fingerprints done for employment at NPS, bring your identification, LiveScan RI-030 form (with SE information and NPS' code pre-filled), and form of payment.

A: Those prints may be acceptable for use by NPS, if they meet our criteria. Fingerprints may be in the LiveScan system for many different reasons, and may not meet School Employee requirements. Contact Beki Kumpula if you have any questions.

A: Yes, there is a cost for fingerprinting. New employees will pay for the printing and then can then request reimbursement from NPS. The amount and acceptable payment method varies, depending on which LiveScan agency you visit. New employees will be reimbursed for the fingerprinting expense via ACH after an original payment receipt and all signed paperwork is turned in to the Administrative Office.

All individuals serving as volunteers at NPS must have a State and Federal background check (iChat) done prior to working alongside any students - this includes chaperones, volunteer coaches, classroom helpers, etc. 

Volunteers must complete the iChat form, available from the NPS Administrator who has arranged for you to volunteer with NPS. Your completed iChat form and a photocopy of your driver's license must be provided to Beki Kumpula prior to volunteering. 

Some unique volunteer situations may also require volunteers to be fingerprinted.
