Miner Packs
Miner Packs - Making a Difference, One Weekend At A Time
"Miner Packs" is the District-wide food assistance program that provides "packs" of non-perishable food for NPS students who face uncertain access to adequate food on weekends. NPS families are able to request their child's enrollment in the Miner Pack program at any time during the school year by filling out a request form via PowerSchool. NPS Volunteer Coordinator Diane Faust purchases food using monetary donations, then she and NPS volunteers build the food packs. Once the packs are ready, NPS staff discreetly distributes them to students' lockers or cubbies on Friday afternoons. Just imagine the impact this can have on a child's weekend, knowing they won't have to go to bed or wake up hungry when they see a Miner Pack in their backpack.
The program operates strictly on donations from individuals and businesses, along with grant funding. The success of the program is thanks to the generosity of parents, grandparents, community members, local groups and business. Since the program began in January 2017, an average 130 students receive Miner Packs each school year. NPS hopes to always grant requests to enroll in the program, but it is dependent on the funds available to purchase food. On average, the Miner Pack program spends $14,000/year on food. With grocery costs on the rise, donations are more important than ever to ease the weekend food insecurity of NPS students. Every donation to the Miner Pack program is greatly appreciated! Your donation makes a difference in the lives of students in every grade who receive this support.
