Non-Residents and School of Choice

SCHOOLS OF CHOICE PROGRAM and NON-RESIDENT STUDENTS

The NPS Schools of Choice application period for the 2025-2026 school year is now closed. For the remainder of the current school year, all non-resident students must complete a non-resident application and be approved prior to enrollment. Contact your student's school office for a non-resident application if you are seeking enrollment for a student for the 2025-2026 school year.


The NPS Schools of Choice application period for the 2026-2027 school year is now open!

Applications will be accepted from April 10, 2026 - September 3, 2026. Enrollment for non-resident students accepted under Schools of Choice is unlimited in all grades at Negaunee Public Schools for the 2026-2027 school year. Once an application is approved, the deadline for enrollment is September 3, 2026.

Per section 105/105c of the State School Aid Act, any student residing in Marquette and Alger counties, as well as all contiguous counties, may apply for enrollment. Enrollment in NPS' Schools of Choice program is unlimited in all programs in grades ECSE-4th at Lakeview Elementary, 5th-8th at Negaunee Middle School, and in 9th-12th at Negaunee High School, including Negaunee Public Schools online courses. Non-resident student enrollment at NPS is subject to the verification of information provided on the application, and in some instances, approval from the student's resident district. Non-resident students enrolling at NPS through Schools of Choice for the 2026-2027 school year must be enrolled no later than Thursday, September 3, 2026. 

Important information about the SOC program and non-resident student enrollment is listed below. To access complete information on the Schools of Choice program, please refer to NPS Board Policy 5305.

  • Transportation to and from school must be provided by the parent.
  • Enrollment priority shall be given to siblings and to other school age children who reside in the same household of a non-resident student already admitted under this program.
  • Students suspended or expelled from his/her home district will generally not be admitted to Negaunee.
  • Transfer of academic credit from another school will be evaluated and determined by Negaunee Public School administration.
  • Athletic Participation Notice: Please note that according to Michigan High School Athletic Association policy, newly enrolled, non-resident students at the high school level are ineligible to participate in athletics until they are deemed eligible by the MHSAA and high school athletic director.

All non-resident students seeking to enroll at NPS outside of the open enrollment periods are subject to approval from their resident district.
